TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Signing
The Vancouver Whitecaps have acquired goalkeeper Evan Newton from USL Championship side Indy Eleven, the club announced Friday. The deal is through 2022 with a club option for 2023.
Newton, 32, spent the last two seasons with Indy where he made 42 appearances. Prior to that, he played for FC Cincinnati prior to the club joining MLS and won the Golden Glove in 2018. He has played for Sacramento Republic FC, Oklahoma City Energy FC and Arizona United SC during his professional career.
"Evan brings a lot of North American experience to our goalkeeper pool and will provide additional veteran leadership to our young group," Whitecaps head coach Marc Dos Santos said in a club statement. "This year, the schedule for both domestic and international play will be extremely busy and it's important we are covered in every position. We are very pleased to welcome Evan and his family to our club."
Newton joins a busy goalkeeping depth chart in Vancouver. Maxime Crepeau and academy graduate Thomas Hasal got the majority of minutes in 2020, while Isaac Boehmer is also signed for 2021.
