Former MLS center back Tyrone Marshall has departed Real Salt Lake’s coaching staff and joined FC Cincinnati’s academy as U-19 coach, it was announced Thursday.
Marshall originally joined RSL’s coaching staff in 2015 after a storied MLS career that included winning two MLS Cups and two Supporters’ Shields, as well as three U.S. Open Cups. His time with RSL spanned several head coaches.
“I want to say thank you to Jeff Cassar, Mike Petke and Freddy Juarez for giving me the opportunity to be on their staffs,” Marshall said in a release. “One of the big reasons I came to Salt Lake City was because I knew there was an opportunity as a young coach to grow within the professional ranks. I also want to say thank you to everyone at RSL that has been a part of my journey in Utah.
“During the pandemic, my family moved back to Kentucky to be closer with my wife’s mother. When the opportunity arose to join them in Kentucky while continuing my coaching progression, we couldn’t pass that up. Cincinnati provides me a great opportunity to challenge myself and grow as a coach.”
In 337 MLS games, Marshall recorded 18 goals and 21 assists across stops with five different clubs from 1998 to 2012: the Colorado Rapids, Miami Fusion, LA Galaxy, Toronto FCand Seattle Sounders. Across 81 caps for Jamaica’s national team, Marshall scored four goals.
“We want to thank Tyrone from the bottom of our hearts. He has been a big part of our success at Real Salt Lake during his tenure,” Juarez said in a release. “As someone who aspires to be a head coach, this is a great opportunity for him to continue his progression and stay close to his family. We will be rooting for him and he will always have a place in the RSL family.”
Marshall joins an FC Cincinnati side that’s entering their third year in MLS. On the academy front, they’ve signed one true Homegrown Player in goalkeeper Beckham Sunderland.
