After falling just shy of making the MLS Cup Playoffs in 2019, expectations are for a postseason berth this year for Matias Almeyda's San Jose Earthquakes, who hope for a better start this season when they host Toronto FC Saturday.
While many Western Conference foes made big moves in the offseason, the Quakes were relatively quiet. The biggest move was the addition of Oswaldo Alanis, the Mexican center back reuniting with his former Chivas Guadalajara boss. The club also did an important piece of business by signing Cristian Espinoza following a big season on loan.
Following a stunning run to the MLS Cup Final, Toronto FC are again one of the teams in the conversation to be playing on the final day of the 2020 season. Joining a talented returning group that includes Alejandro Pozuelo, Jozy Altidore and Michael Bradley, who is sidelined to start the season following ankle surgery, is Pablo Piatti, the 31-year-old Argentine who represents the club's biggest offseason move. Piatti will have to wait to make his club debut, however, as he's been ruled out of this match with a hamstring injury.
