Damir Kreilach's 86th-minute header lifted Real Salt Lake to a 2-2 draw at FC Dallas in a wet and wild affair at Toyota Stadium on Saturday night.
Kreilach's late equalizer canceled out Ryan Hollingshead's deflected strike for Dallas two minutes earlier, during an evening where rain and slick conditions challenged the footing of players and handling of goalkeepers on both sides.
Rubio Rubin added his team-leading fourth goal of the season early for Salt Lake. David Ochoa made nine saves for the visitors, who have four points from two away trips this season.
Franco Jara opened his 2021 account from the penalty spot late in the first half for Dallas, which now is 1-0-3 in four home games.
Goals
Three Things
- THE BIG PICTURE: The wet conditions clearly prompted Dallas to be more direct, and while it didn't bring the desired result, the caliber of opportunities will leave manager Luchi Gonzalez with something to think about. The hosts had 29 shots and 10 efforts on target, not including Jara's penalty conversion. They also earned 15 corner kicks, exceeding their previous season high by halftime, and dramatically bested RSL in expected goals, 2.7 to 0.6. (The xG tally was 1.9 to 0.6 without Jara's penalty.)
- MOMENT OF THE MATCH: Rubio Rubin sure has a thing for stylish goals. His opener Saturday won't quite draw the hype of his sensational bicycle against San Jose, but in many ways these two touches were just as impressive, one to slip his defender and a second to beat Jimmy Maurer.
- MAN OF THE MATCH: David Ochoa. The 20-year-old had some challenges handling a slew of slick shots, but he also made some exceptional reflex saves in the first 45 minutes in particular. He couldn't be blamed on either goal, with Hollingshead's strike taking a wicked redirection off Ochoa's own defender.
