Real Salt Lake and Minnesota United are both looking to book a berth in the knockout stage when the co-leaders in Group D square off Friday night.
RSL opened the MLS is Back Tournament with a 2-0 win over Rocky Mountain rivals Colorado Rapids. Albert Rusnak opened his 2020 account in the 27th minute, cleaning up the scraps from Douglas Martinez's cross that was parried away. Rusnak had a golden chance for a brace, but his penalty kick, and Nick Besler's rebound, were both saved by Clint Irwin. However, Damir Kreilach would not miss with a long-range effort in the 76th minute.
Minnesota United, meanwhile, left things late in a come-from-behind win over 10-man Sporting Kansas City. After falling behind in the 43rd minute on a goal by Khiry Shelton, the tide turned the Loons way when goalkeeper Tim Melia was sent off for DOGSO in the 74th minute. An own goal by Shelton leveled the score, setting the stage for Kevin Molino's stoppage-time heroics.
