The Colorado Rapids announced on Monday that midfielder Marcelo Sarvas has undergone arthroscopic surgery on his right knee and will be sidelined for an estimated four to six weeks.
The 33-year-old Brazilian's procedure took place in Los Angeles, where his family still resides after his offseason trade to Colorado from the LA Galaxy. Sarvas will remain in Southern California during the rehabilitation process.
“He is expected to be absent from Rapids training for four to six weeks before undertaking a 'return to play' protocol,” said the Rapids in a club statement. “Everyone at Colorado Rapids would like to wish Marcelo a speedy recovery.”
An influential central midfielder who helped the Galaxy win two MLS Cups in his three years with the club, Sarvas has logged 462 minutes in six appearances with the Rapids, and notched one assist. He's currently halfway through a two-game suspension for an incident in Colorado's 3-1 loss to Seattle on April 18.
