CF Montréal acquire midfielder Joaquin Torres on loan from Newell’s Old Boys

TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Signing

CF Montréal have acquired Argentine midfielder Joaquin Torres on loan from Newell’s Old Boys for the 2021 season with a purchase option, the club announced Thursday. The deal will be confirmed upon a medical and receipt of his International Transfer Certificate (ITC).

“We are happy to welcome Joaquin among us,” sporting director Olivier Renard said in a release. “He is a winger who can also play as an attacking midfielder, who will bring his creativity to our game. He likes to play vertically and pierce defensive lines through his one-on-one qualities."

Torres, 24, has been with Newell's Old Boys since 2010, joining their first team in 2015. He scored twice in 27 games during the 2017-18 season, then spent the 2019-20 season on loan at Greek club Volos FC. While in Greece’s first division, he scored five goals in 24 games.

By signing Torres, Montréal continue a busy offseason that’s seen them acquire midfielder Djorde Mihailovic and defenders Kamal Miller and Kiki Struna via trades within MLS. They’ve also gone international, bringing in Nigeria youth international forward Sunusi Ibrahim and Norway international forward Bjorn Johnsen.

Montreal are entering their second season with head coach Thierry Henry at the helm. They were the Eastern Conference’s No. 9 seed in the Audi 2020 MLS Cup Playoffs, though fell in the Play-In Round against the New England Revolution.
